Historic Theatre Is Now Fully Equipped To Deal With Hot Or Cold Weather!
Friday - August 24, 2018
Richmond’s Georgian Theatre Royal – the UK’s oldest working theatre in its original form – can now offer its audiences comfortable temperatures whatever the weather.

Engineering experts have recently been called into the Grade 1 listed building to recommission and update an air conditioning system that has been out of action for over a decade. It is now in full working order and able to effectively cool the auditorium as well as boost heat in colder weather snaps.

Clare Allen, Chief Executive of The Georgian Theatre Royal, said: “It has always been a challenge to maintain optimum temperatures in a building of this age but the recent extremes of weather have prompted us to divert funds and invest in this work.

“We are now confident that our audiences can still enjoy the incredible ambience of this wonderful 18th-century building whilst benefitting from modern-day comforts,” she added.

Built in 1788, the Theatre currently has a capacity audience of around 200 although in Georgian times this number was nearer 400. There were also no toilets or bars, which are all now part of the Theatre-going experience.

The Theatre’s Autumn season is now open for booking and includes a full range of live entertainment from high-quality drama and music for every taste to top stand-up comedy acts and inspirational children’s theatre.
