The latest winners of the Amazing Neighbours competition received multiple nominations from their street.

The acts of kindness of Jane and Adrian Chandler, who live in Conyers Close in Richmond, were noted in several different nominations that were made in appreciation of their efforts. Their neighbours over the back fence, Nicholas Ozanne and Alice Montgomery, nominated them for: “Their selfless generosity in offering time and energy to support so many people in our neighbourhood.”

“If I am away, without asking, Jane and Ady keep an eye on my house; they’ll cut the grass and put bins out.”

Another set of neighbours, Amy and Jamie Simeon said, “Jane and Adrian are fantastic neighbours. Always helping others on the street by cutting and pruning trees, lending tools as well as shovelling snow in the winter.”

This kindness extends to the wider community as well. Most months you can spot Jane and Adrian collecting the litter that gets thrown from cars onto the roads around Richmond and particularly in between town and Catterick.

“It’s not unusual for us to round-up 60 or 70 bin bags full of tins, bottles and food packaging, that carelessly gets tossed on the road by inconsiderate motorists,” said Jane. “I do wish people would be a bit more thoughtful and just take their rubbish home or deposit it in a bin."

Amazing Neighbours is the initiative of the Richmond Yorkshire Community Interest Company, a not-for-profit social enterprise. Anyone in the DL10 catchment area can nominate one of their neighbours, either online at www.amazingneighbours.com or they can pick up a form from the Richmond Information Centre in the Market Hall. The judging panel includes Baroness Harris of Richmond; Chris Brown, CEO at The Station; Richmond School headteacher Jenna Potter; Hannah Chapman, editor of the Darlington & Stockton Times and David Walker, CIC director and chairman of the Richmondshire Refugee Support Group.

The entries are judged anonymously, and a £100 shopping voucher is rewarded each month.

Amazing Neighbours has been made possible with the support of local businesses and organisations including Cooper & Leatherbarrow Opticians, in Finkle Street, Richmond; Zetland Estates; Oliviers Furniture on the Gallowfields Trading Estate; North Yorkshire Council; Richmond Information Centre; The Station Cinema; the Darlington & Stockton Times; Purple Creative Studio and Richmondshire Today.
