What makes Richmond such a great place to live is the huge amount of things going on within the community, with a whole host of societies and groups to suit a wide range of interests. One such example is Richmond Amateur Dramatic Society, which presents its Summer show during July and August at The Georgian Theatre Royal.

Opening on Thursday 27 July is Macbeth – but maybe not as you’ve seen it before! Set against the backdrop of the 2008 financial crisis, this production will feature traders’ offices, stocks, shares, seduction and sharp suits.

Directing the play is The Georgian Theatre's Chief Executive, Clare Allen, who is well-known for her direction of the Theatre's legendary pantomimes. “It has been a lot of fun to parallel Macbeth’s greed, ambition and selfishness with the traits and reckless behaviour of an investment banker. 2008 was not that long ago, and people will remember how materialism and excesses led to dire consequences. The tragedy of Macbeth matches this narrative perfectly,” said Clare.

The traditional storyline remains, and the classic Shakespearean language is on display throughout, as we see Macbeth struggle with the enormity of the deeds that have to be done in order to achieve his ambitions, and how his actions affect those around him.

“Although very much a tragedy, the cast of RADS have managed to infuse the show with a lot of comedy to offset the torment! The hope is that the show will be very entertaining and, especially for newcomers to Shakespearean text, accessible.  And for those who know the story very well, we hope they will find this rendition a lot of fun,” she added.

Macbeth runs from Thursday 27th – Saturday 29th July and again the following week, Thursday 3rd – Saturday 5th August at 7.30pm. Tickets are available online or from the Box Office on 01748 825252.

Richmond Amateur Dramatic Society performs three plays a year, and is open to new members for both on stage and backstage roles. Monthly club nights are held at 6-8 Castle Hill, Richmond, on the second Monday of the month. For further information about joining RADS, please email: secretary@richmond-ads.org.uk
