Richmond's Georgian Theatre Royal is set to host the world premiere of acclaimed playwright John Godber’s latest production, The Highwayman, on October 23 and 24.

Written and directed by John Godber, the renowned creator of the smash-hit play Bouncers, The Highwayman transports audiences back to 1769 Yorkshire. It’s a time of social change, rapid population growth, and economic prosperity in the region.

The Spa towns are bustling, the races at York are packed, and Hull's new theatre is attracting attention. The atmosphere is one of excitement and excess, with ale houses overflowing with people seeking fortune, pleasure, and the next big gamble.

Set against this vivid backdrop, The Highwayman is a thrilling adventure inspired by Yorkshire’s rich history of notorious highwaymen. From the daring escapades of Nevison to the dramatic downfall of Dick Turpin, the play explores a world where temptation, crime, and ambition collide. Godber’s storytelling blends visceral action, dark humour, and modern themes, bringing the spirit of these historical figures to life in a way that feels remarkably relevant.

John Godber shared his excitement about the project, saying:

"I have always wanted to explore the relationship between highwaymen and Yorkshire, especially living so close to the village where Dick Turpin was caught. But I needed a setting that would allow for the dynamic, physical theatre style I’m known for, while maintaining historical authenticity.

When I saw the original woodland scene at the Georgian Theatre in Richmond, I knew I’d found the perfect backdrop.

It’s a fascinating time and I hope to reflect the bustling muscular life of Yorkshire and the desperate stakes the Highwaymen were willing to risk.”

The Highwayman promises to be an exhilarating and entertaining experience, offering audiences a fresh take on Yorkshire's bustling past. History has never felt so modern, theft never more attractive.
