Talented Musicians Come Back To Their Roots For Richmond Jazz Festival
Tuesday - September 8, 2015
Leading jazz musicians will tread the boards with up-and-coming local talent at Richmond’s annual jazz festival, being held this weekend at The Georgian Theatre Royal.

Starting off the festival on Friday 11th September is a double bill featuring two groups of young musicians who are fast making a name for themselves across the UK. Two of the performers – Joe Williamson and Will Stockbridge – started their musical careers as founder members of the youth group Richmond Jam, who are also appearing at the festival.

Square One is a Glasgow-based jazz quartet, comprising Joe Williamson (guitar), Pete Johnstone (piano), David Bowden (bass) and Stephen Henderson (drums). Known for their rhythmic vitality and rich harmonies, the group - who released their debut album last year - has toured extensively across the UK. They are joined by the talented Continuum Trio, comprising Will Sensicle (guitar), Will Stockbridge (bass guitar) and Peter Udall (drums) who started playing together at Leeds College of Music.

On Saturday 12th September, two of the UK’s front rank jazz artists Norma Winstone and Nikki Iles will take to the stage. During her career, Norma has worked with many leading European and American jazz musicians and has been nominated twice for the BBC Jazz Awards for Best Vocalist. She has made many highly regarded albums and was awarded an MBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List. Nikki Iles is at the forefront of British jazz musicians as a pianist and composer. She leads her own quintet and two trios and performs on a regular basis with a number of other top-name groups.

Rounding off the festival on Sunday 13th September is Richmond Jam, a talented ensemble of musicians aged between 12 and 19 years from Richmond and the Dales. The group which take part in an ongoing programme of professionally led workshops will perform a lively concert of original music and jazz standards.

Chris Powls, Artistic Director of the Richmond Jazz Festival, is delighted with the line-up for this year’s festival. “It is fantastic to see such an array of talent from young musicians at the start of their musical journeys to top-class national performers at the height of their careers. It is particularly gratifying that two of our former young musicians have returned with their own groups now that they have started to make a name for themselves on the jazz circuit.

“This is really what the festival is all about. Not just to showcase talent but also to provide inspiration to performers at all levels who can then progress with confidence to create and perform their own music,” he added.

Richmond Jam welcomes new members to their workshops. For more information, please email Chris Powls:
